I am happy that I could attend the 11th edition of the Botconf conference, held in the beautiful French city of Nice this year. It was an a fantastic edition of my favorite conference, and I would like to share a few tidbits about it with you.

Nice

I had only a few hours to walk around this beautiful city, but I enjoyed every minute. Of course, I needed to visit the Basilica of Notre Dame, the largest church in Nice. I also visited St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral, Western Europe’s largest Eastern Orthodox cathedral. Both sites are outstanding and worth visiting.

Surprisingly, I found a little bunny living near St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral. Firstly, I was worried he had run away from nearby apartments, but then I figured there were more of them nearby, and they had plenty of food provided to them by locals.

Interesting Talks and Projects

As always, the program was full of exciting talks. Organizers are already publishing the recordings of the talks on YouTube. The first two days are now available, and more are coming soon (if the authors permit to share the recording). Traditionally, I would like to highlight a few talks and projects that sparked my interest:

  • A Taxonomic Overview of Prevalent Malware Communication Strategies by Steffen Enders, Daniel Plohmann, and Manuel Blatt
  • Malware distribution at scale – The ecosystem of TA577 by Fabian Marquardt
  • IoT Malware and Rookit Detections Using Electromagnetic Insights: Unveiling the Unseen by Duy Phuc Pham, Damien Marion, and Annelie Heuser
  • Rhadamanthys: The new stealer making WAVs in the eCrime landscape by Bea Venzon
  • Everyone Gets a Webshell! Or, Backdooring Web Hosting Companies in Scale by Daniel Frank
  • Libra’s Ghidra Library by Max ‘Libra’ Kersten: https://maxkersten.nl/libras-ghidra-library/
  • AAl-Khaser — Android Al-Khaser — https://github.com/eurecom-s3/AAl-Khaser
  • Coderex by Souhail Hammou (@Dark_Puzzle) — https://github.com/intel471/coderex

My Talk

My presentation was about GenRex, a generator of regular expression. I talked about how GenRex works and what possible use cases are. I also demonstrated the usage of the tool in several examples. The presentation and the paper with more details will be available on the https://www.botconf.eu/ website. I also mentioned the ongoing Know Your YARA Rules series I am working on.
